I’m not surprised – at all.
First, because it’s California – notoriously the most “progressive, push the envelope” state in the union.
Second, because the California courts are notorious for overturning things that the people of the state have voted for/against. Anyone who can look at the past and gauge what the future holds had a sense that this was coming…
Third, because the scriptures tell us that this EXACT sort of thing is what happens when people “exchange the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1). The truth of God is that He created Adam and Eve, not Madame and Eve (or Adam and Steve). God created male and female. He did so intentionally, for a specific purpose, as a model of what He INTENDED for mankind. That’s the truth of God, while the lie screams that California’s ruling is all about equality, human rights, and non-discrimination.
Those are effective words to use for their cause, simply because our culture has only as much discernment as it takes to think it’s way off of a cliff. People hear those words, are afraid of being seen as a biggot or prejudiced person and they jump on the bandwagon. Or they don’t want to be perceived as “judgemental” and decide that it’s none of their business… and in doing so abdicate any sense of discerning right from wrong. We’ve become a culture so consumed with self-protection and being “nice” that we have developed backbones of Jello (c). No spine or convictions = downward spiral for the culture.
The truth is that though those words may be effective for the same-sex marriage advocates to use, they are not accurate words in this case. Nobody in their right mind (Christian or not) wants to deny any of these homosexual people their “human rights.” We don’t want them to die. We don’t want them to suffer or be tortured. We don’t want them to be treated wrongly. We simply desire to stand on time-honored, God-given principles of human relationships. When advocates of this type of thing throw out words like “human rights,” the question we must ask is, “Since when did marriage become a human right?” It’s not. It never has been. Marriage is a gift given by our Creator, not a human right. And in creating marriage He set the boundaries and guidelines for it – boundaries which are being overstepped in our culture time and again (not just in issues of same-sex marriage).
My appeal is for Christians and others to wake up, look behind the rhetoric, and see what’s really happening. Clever words are being used to give an impression that is not true – that homosexuals are being unfairly treated, disparaged, abused, and that this California ruling is an act of “and justice for all.” But that’s not the case. This ruling is a case of buying into a lie rather than clinging to what is true, tested, and foundational to healthy society. What do I mean by that? Just watch – if this ruling stands (it will be voted on again in a few months) then within a matter of 10 years there will be similar measures aimed toward group marriages, adult/child marriages, human/animal marriages, etc. You may think I’m crazy – and that’s O.K. But just watch and see if I’m right.
When you erode the foundation, nothing solid can stand and everything crumbles. In human relationships and families, marriage (male & female together) is a cornerstone of the foundation. God created it to be so.
