Christians, E-mail “facts”, and the TRUTH!

I’m SO TIRED of the sensationalistic and crazy e-mails that are making the rounds about the political candidates on both sides of the fence – and I feel that SOMEBODY really NEEDS to speak some sense into the frenzied atmosphere in which we find ourselves.  So, I have a few words to say to the patriotic, well-meaning, but IGNORANT Christians out there who keep forwarding these sensationalized but UTTERLY FALSE e-mails!

STOP IT!

Jesus was all about the truth, not about advancing a particular mindset or ideal no matter what it took to do so!  Christians (and everyone else for that matter) would do well to borrow that page from HIS playbook!  I’ll give you an example of the stupidity and ignorance that I’m talking about…

A recent e-mail I received stated that in his book, “The Audacity of Hope,” Senator Barack Obama said, “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”  That’s sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it?  And from his own book!  Surely that’s reliable!????  Think again!  The actual quote, IN CONTEXT is listed below…

“Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging.  They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

So what’s his point?  That he will stand with MUSLIM-AMERICANS to see that they are treated fairly, as their citizenship demands, should others get in a panic toward all Muslims, as was done to Japanese Americans during World War II.  Makes a BIG difference to see the context, doesn’t it?  Here are a few other examples that have made the rounds lately…
  • Palin’s book-banning when she was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska – FALSE
  • Obama being a Muslim – FALSE
  • McCain crashing fighter jets when he was in the military – FALSE
  • and the list goes on…

I know, I know – it’s easy to get caught up in the hysteria of a sensational claim when it comes from someone you trust.  But here’s the question, “You may trust them, but do you trust the source THEY got it from?”  Chances are, you don’t even KNOW where they got it from!!!!  If you’re intrigued by something you receive on e-mail, here’s the general rule of thumb – ready?

CHECK OUT THE TRUTH OF IT YOURSELF.  IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE TIME OR INCLINATION TO DO THAT, THEN DO NOT SEND IT ON TO OTHERS!

Come on Christians!  When we send along spurious or slanderous e-mails about poltical candidates (or anyone else) it gives the impression that Christians are ignorant, gullible, panic stricken, wild-eyed fools!  We of all people should be discerning, wise, and full of the Spirit of Christ when it comes to truth VS error.  Let’s not take part in tearing down the very church to which we belong through passing along DISINFORMATION!
