The best or worst or slightly interesting of the web over the last week (from my humble perspective)
- The book “50 shades of gray,” which is nothing more than well-promoted smut, has been a runaway best seller in a culture where such things should no longer surprise us. How is it that people don’t see it for what it really is?
- Many, many people struggle with debilitating guilt over things they’ve done, or things that have happened to them. I’ve often quoted Luther as saying, “the purpose of guilt is to drive us to the cross.” Here is an article that drives that point home.
- Here is an amazing video of landscapes… worship the Creator as you watch!

I found the article on “50 Shades of Gray” interesting. These kind of books have been around at least since I was a child. I think the difference is that this book is “out of the closet” in that women are not ashamed to admit they have read it. it is definitely a sad reflection on our culture when pornograpy and vampire love stories are the most popular books in circulation. I was introduced to written pornography by the young step mother of one of my friends when I was around 12. Lots of virgins being raped and tied to beds. But then of course they always fell in love afterwards. It wasn’t until much later that I realized how much it messed up my mind on what a proper relationship between a man and a woman looked like.
Yes Laurie, the type of “literature” presented in such books warps reality in our minds, as you said. It’s one of the reasons I’m desiring to make writing a significant part of what I do in the new venture… it’s a powerful medium to shape hearts, minds, and attitudes. Pray for me there… just 5 days and I’m no longer a Pastor, walking with the LORD day to day is an adventure!
I’m with Laurie. Was introduced to bodice-ripper type “romance” novels as a young teen and had my view of relationship and marriage polluted for a long while. 7 years of counseling corrected my wrong thinking on marriage, and a two year complete fast of all fiction was the final step to clear my mind and end my addiction to ungodly genre. That said, I think the popularity of Vampire books among young women shows a deep desire for what we can only have with Christ – a soul mate, whose sacrificial giving of his life for ours forever changes us and gives us life in abundance, everlasting. But like so many things the Truth about Christ, the Lover of our souls has been horribly twisted.

Saraspondence… I’m so encouraged by your open sharing, as I was with Laurie’s. It’s amazing what trash the enemy can foist upon us, and we naively accept it. I’m not pointing blame at either of you, just highlighting the subtle ways our enemy goes at us. I’m thankful for God’s grace, and your willingness to walk that road with Him. He is good, so good.
